WALKERS are being urged to take steps to save several footpaths in Frampton Cotterell from extinction.
Frampton Cotterell Parish Council has launched an appeal to identify and rescue footpaths in the village that have recently vanished from council maps.
Councillors have decided to investigate three paths they believe should be marked on South Gloucestershire Council's definitive map.
Cllr Graham Hayter, chairman of the parish council's highways committee, told the Gazette it was important that the paths were reclaimed.
He said: "As a council we are responsible for the upkeep of paths on the definitive map.
"If the paths are not on the map we cannot look after them."
Cllr Hayter said he believed the paths were lost during the transition when Avon County Council was dissolved and South Gloucestershire Council was formed.
He added: "Some of these paths have been used for years and we need to get them registered.
"If we get 12 or more people to give evidence that they use the path we can start the process."
Anyone who has evidence or information to support the addition of paths to the definitive map should call Zoe Williams, clerk to Frampton Cotterell Parish Council, on 01454 868370.
