Like Iain McCrindle I have often pondered the origins of Thornbury's Gillingstool.
The first mystery is why can residents never seem to make up their minds whether it is pronounced with a hard or a soft G but the question to which I have never received a satisfactory answer is: Who was this man Gilling and what was so remarkable about his tool that they named a road after it?
