CONSERVATIVES in Winterbourne have launched a campaign to win funding for the expansion of the village library.
Winterbourne councillors David Fletcher and John Godwin have publicly supported a funding bid of more than £200,000 for the extension of the library.
The extension, campaigners claim, would lead to a greater range of books and DVDs as well as an enhanced children's section.
Cllr Godwin said that the library had become a victim of its own success and it had now run out of space for more stock.
He told the Gazette: "We are campaigning to extend it so we can have a much wider range of services provided and in particular an enhanced children's section for local people to use."
Officials at South Gloucestershire Council had said the library would be expanded in 2003 but nothing every transpired.
Three years later, the Tory councillors are pressing for the council to deliver its promise.
Cllr Godwin added this week: "The previous council promised to deliver the expansion of the library some years ago but unfortunately the project was abandoned and Winterbourne was missed out whilst other libraries were improved.
We want to make sure the needs of Winterbourne Library users needs are addressed.
"Hopefully we will be able to achieve the support from the rest of the council to ensure this long overdue extension is finally achieved."
The library bid is set to be decided by South Gloucestershire Council's ruling cabinet on March 6.
However, numerous other groups and projects will also be hoping for financial backing from the council's already overstretched budget.
