Welcome support

From the archive, first published Friday 3rd Feb 2006.

WITH reference to Pauline Darley's letter, Appeal for dig, (Gazette, Jan 27). Whilst thanking Pauline Darley for showing her support for the archaeological excavation being carried out at The Chantry by volunteers organised by Thornbury Museum, we would like to make clear that the chairman, board and staff of the Thornbury and District Community Association and its landscape gardener have been extremely helpful throughout the entire proceedings which have already continued longer than expected.

The tree in question is in a conservation area and therefore has to be dealt with through the proper channels. There has never been any question of leaving the cellars open for viewing as the ancient mortar in the walls would rapidly start to deteriorate; the best way to preserve the archaeology is to rebury it. However many photographs have been taken and a full report covering the site and the finds will be written at the end of the dig. A history of the Chantry buildings from old documents is also being produced. It is hoped that a permanent exhibition about the site will be mounted in the Chantry for all to see.
