Hellenic League Supplementary Cup Preliminary Round Almondsbury Town 1 Bishops Cleeve 3
BISHOPS CLEEVE have been a bit of a nightmare for Almondsbury manager Paul Weeks and the bogey continued in the Hellenic League Supplementary Cup last Saturday.
Weeks had been manager of Bitton when they lost to them in the FA Cup in September and had also tasted defeat at Bishops Cleeve's hands during a short spell as assistant manager at Cadbury Heath.
Weeks' first game as Almondsbury boss against Cleeve had to be abandoned due to a serious injury to an Almondsbury player and this most recent match ended in a 3-1 defeat.
He cannot have any arguments with this result though. Almondsbury simply were not at the races.
They went a goal down in just 38 seconds when an inswinging corner against a strong wind went straight in and then they conceded two further goals in the last five minutes of the first half through sloppy defending.
"You would not think it was the same side that won 3-1 against Wantage the week before," said club chairman Bob Jenkins.
A changed system for the second half did throw up a couple of positives, however, with newly returned from Brislington Justin Bishop and new signing Karl Madge from Ilfracombe both looking good.
Bishop reduced the arrears 15 minutes into the half and chances went to Benji Tricker and Danny Copeland but really this was a game that Weeks and the Almonds will want to forget.
This Saturday will be just about the biggest challenge of the season for Almondsbury who are home to top of the table Didcot.
GFA Trophy Almondsbury Town 0 Slimbridge 2
SECOND half goals from Johnny Meadows and Joe Tustain sent Slimbridge into their second cup semi-final in a week and put Almondsbury Town out of another cup competition.
The visitors had the better of the first half, although Paul McKelvaney had a good chance for the Almonds, though his shot was weak.
Meadows struck the first goal in the 55th minute of a particularly robust encounter.
Fred Ward's corner was deflected into the path of Meadows and he rammed a low shot through a crowd from 12 yards.
Ashley Thomas cleared an effort off the line five minutes later as Town pushed for an equaliser.
However, gaps were left at the back and Slimbridge secured the tie eight minutes from the end of the game.
Substitute Joe Tustain turned well and drove in a skidding shot from 20 yards.
