I WOULD like to express my relief that South Gloucestershire Council has abandoned its plans to impose car parking charges across the district.
Free car parking is a vital component in enabling our local high streets to compete fairly with larger superstores and consequently a crucial component in having vibrant and successful town centres.
Conservatives achieved the free car parking policy in 2004 with the scrapping of charges in Kingswood and we have been determined to retain it there and for other communities.
We would like to thank everyone in Hanham, Thornbury, Warmley and Winterbourne who supported our campaign to save free parking by bombarding the council with letters and petitions in support for free parking. The public backlash was entirely right and has saved our town centres from becoming ghost towns through this ill-conceived and damaging proposal.
