Bakers with golden touch

From the Gazette, first published Friday 29th Jul 2005.

ALREADY an award-winning bakery, Hobbs House in Chipping Sodbury has scooped another medal to add to its growing cabinet of trophies. The bakery in High Street is renowned for its delectable cakes and pastries, speciality breads and traditional home-made preserves.

And one of the company's most popular brands, made on the Aga at a home in Wickwar, has won a gold title in the 2005 Taste of the West food and drink awards.

Tory Wells, wife of co-owner Sam, makes Hobbs' lemon curd from a traditional recipe at the family's home in the village High Street. On winning the prestigious title, Mr Wells told the Gazette: "We are very excited to win a gold award and have already received phone calls from customers wanting to buy our lemon curd now it is award winning. "It is a real achievement to win gold and recognition of our ethos that minimal, simple ingredients are best."

Mrs Wells uses just four fresh ingredients to give the lemon curd - a favourite spread on toast, bread and scones and in tarts and sponges - its tangy, fresh taste, which impressed the award judges so much.

John Sheaves, chief executive of Taste of the West, said: "As the number of entries to the food and drink awards grows each year so does the standard and quality of the products.

"Every year we are astounded by the flavour of the food."
