Pupils plan relaunch

From the Gazette, first published Friday 22nd Jul 2005.

ENTERPRISING young students at The Ridings High School, Winterbourne have relaunched a bike that was first designed 40 years ago.

More than 100 Year 12 budding entrepreneurs worked in teams to develop a marketing plan ahead of the relaunch of the Moulton bike.

They were given tight deadlines and a budget in which to plan, develop and present the concept to a panel of judges.

Business leaders from across South Gloucestershire and Bristol talked to the aspiring students to offer advice on how best to sell and advertise the bike.

The teams then spent two days deciding how to relaunch the Moulton bike, designed by Bradford-on-Avon based family firm Alex Moulton Bicycles.

Each presented their ideas to Shaun Moulton as well as James Durie and Ian Robbins of Business West.

The winners will be given a tour of the Moulton factory and enjoy a balloon ride, courtesy of Business West, and receive a shield.

Winning team member Matthew Cooper said: "I really appreciate that staff at the school have worked hard to provide this opportunity for us. I am also appreciative that such senior members of local organisations have been prepared to give up so much time. I have learnt so much from the experience."

The project was run by the Innovations team at The Ridings, which aims to encourage business links between the school and the outside world.

Innovations director Paul Lobb said: "This has been a very successful event and I am amazed by the quality and innovation of work that has been produced by students in a short space of time."
