A SCHOOLGIRL from Winterbourne has smashed the national 800 metre record by seven seconds.
Emily Fitzhugh, 11, broke the schools' record and qualified for the national athletics final by completing two laps of the track in two minutes and thirty seconds.
The youngster, who attends Silverhill School, will now compete in the final at Alexandra Stadium, Birmingham on Monday, July 4.
She won the under 12s race at Millfield Stadium, Sheffield last week. Her teacher June Smele told the Gazette: "I was very proud of her performance. We had travelled a long way but it was worth it."
Emily is also a strong swimmer and joined her three teammates to come 14th in the country in the mixed relay category.
The quarter - Emily, Hayley Hardy, Annabelle Goddard and Ben Carter, all aged 11 - picked up the accolade at the national schools' swimming finals at the Ponds Forge Swimming Centre, Sheffield. They represented Silverhill School at the event.
Added Ms Smele: "They were up against some very tough competition so I am very proud of them all."
