Treasured clock is on its way home

A NEW clock will be given to Yate Shopping Centre in time for this month's Remembrance services after a helping hand from local groups.

Yate Town Council, the Women's Section of the Royal British Legion and the management at Yate Shopping Centre have joined hands to erect a new clock in the centre after the old one was taken down during a revamp of the precinct.

Controversy surrounded the removal of the original clock, which came to an untimely end when it was removed to make way for Boswells Cafe in Four Seasons Square.

Many shoppers were said to be disappointed that the focal point of the precinct had been removed and there was no sign of it returning.

However, a new clock will be put up in time for the commemoration of 60 years of peace since the end of World War 2.

A plaque depicting the words "They grow not old as we that are left grow old" will be erected on the pillar at the side of the clock as a reminder to visitors what the clock represents.

Shopping Centre owners Dominion Corporate Trustees has paid for the clock and will donate it to the people of Yate as a gesture of their commitment to the town.

The clock will temporarily be located in East Walk although it will eventually be returned to its home in Four Seasons Square.

Marketing manager Beverley Organ said "We are delighted to see a clock back in Yate Shopping Centre and we are very excited about all the proposed improvements in the pipeline that should make Yate even better."

The clock will be officially unveiled at a memorial service in the centre on Sunday (10.30am).
