WATSE and recycling will be top of the agenda at a meeting in Yate early next year.
The future of South Gloucestershire's waste and recycling services over the next five years will be discussed at a series of forum meetings across the local authority area, including the Frome Vale Area Forum at Brimsham Green School on Thursday, January 12 (7pm).
The local authority has carried out a review of its existing services and is looking at options to be delivered with its long-term strategy in mind.
The council has 20 years left of a 25-year contract with SITA, a private firm, the authority contracts out to collect residents' recycling waste. The review will allow the council to adapt the contract to reflect the changing circumstances and legislation.
Chiefs in charge of South Gloucestershire Council's recycling figures and targets feels that the most important considerations of the review are protecting the environment, complying with EU legislation and improved service to the public.
Views are being sought on a number of options outlined for better waste management including: BLOB: increasing the capacity of the area's in-vessel composting plant BLOB: a review of bulky waste collections BLOB: a replacement SORT IT!* site for Stoke Gifford BLOB: a range of service improvement schemes BLOB: improved plastic bottle recycling and BLOB: weekly collection of household food waste so it can be composted
Funding has already been set aside for some schemes, whilst others will entail additional costs. However, in some cases, the costs will be off set by paying for services that will help the council avoid large fines under the EU legislation.
Residents living in the Yate and Chipping Sodbury area are being encouraged to attend the area forum to find out more information and to discuss the proposals. Following the consultation period, members of the council make a decision on which proposals to include in the authority's Waste Strategy and make decisions on how the council should invest their Waste Management Budgets. Any new services will be delivered by SITA.
A questionnaire is available for people to register their opinions, which must be returned to the council by January 31.
