Ready to tune in?

THORNBURY FM hits the airwaves for the first time tomorrow - so turn on and tune in to 87.7 on the FM dial.

"It's been a long time coming but it's here at last " said station chairman, town vicar the Rev David Primrose. "What we really need now is for people to tune in and give it a listen.

"We're on air from 7am every day through to midnight until December 2 and when we say there's something for everyone, we really mean it. We've come up with a programme schedule that we think addresses the whole community.

"It's a major undertaking and there's scope for the odd glitch. But this is community radio in its truest sense and we'll be learning as we go. The aim is to meet the needs and aspirations of a vibrant and caring community.

"We'll be airing local issues, showcasing local talent and providing a platform for local groups.

"The most important thing is that people give us a try and form their own impressions. One thing is certain - we are going to need the feedback.

"As we prepare for this first broadcast, our message to Thornbury and district is enjoy listening, get your friends to tune in, and join us in this new community enterprise."

Mr Primrose said it was intended to operate the station as a registered charity and to be on air for a fortnight twice a year with the next broadcast scheduled for May 2006, coinciding with Thornbury Arts Festival.

About 20 people have played a key part in developing the organisation and there will be around 40 presenters of all ages. Hundreds more local voices will also be heard in interview.

First at the mike at 7am tomorrow morning will be Joe Clayton with "Wake up to Thornbury FM", a three-hour programme of music and information.

Other "launch day" programmes include Family Time (a programme for all the family), Down You Way (interviews with local people), Saturday afternoon sport and music and, in the early evening, Thornbury Drama - a play, a story and humour from local actors.

Saturday night music lovers are well catered for with a disco party programme and a world music show.

Further details can be obtained from the station website www.thornbury-fm.org.uk where programme details will be updated as necessary.
